Building Safety Month - Daily Tips

Founded by the International Code Council (ICC), Building Safety Month is celebrated by jurisdictions worldwide during the month of May. As part of the City of Malibu's celebration of Building Safety Month, a new "Tip of the Day" will be offered here each day from May 1 to June 1. This year's theme is Building Safety Month: Code Officials Keep You Safe. Check back daily to learn something new you can do to improve the safety of our natural and built environment. Some tips will also include links to further details about that topic.

May 20: Check for warning signs of an unsafe deck - wobbly railings, loose screws, rot and corrosion. Week Three (May 20-26) -- Backyard & Pool Safety

May 19: Stay tuned to radio, TV and NOAA Weather Radio for official updates and critical lifesaving weather information. Remember, reception is usually best if placed near a window.

May 18: Secure lawn furniture and any other loose outdoor items that can become windborne and can cause injury or damage during storms with high winds. Don't forget trash cans, grills, toys and potted plants.

May 17: Strap water heaters, appliances and TVs to wall studs; don't forget to anchor bookcases and heavy furniture. Know where and how to shut off electricity, gas, and water services.

May 16: Think pool safety. Make sure drain covers are fitted or have suction releases. Backyard Safety

May 15: Create a 72 hour disaster supply kit. Visit the Red Cross website and get some ideas.

May 14: Have an emergency plan; include food, water and medication. Malibu Survival Guide

May 13: Use surge protectors to protect electronics from direct strikes.

May 12: Building safety codes require specific venting sizes and combustion air provisions for gas appliances to ensure safe operation. Contact Malibu Building Safety staff for more information.

May 11: Make sure all occupants can get out and emergency crews can get in. Keep hallways clear & don't block emergency escape windows & doors.

May 10: Consider installing protective shutters or heavy fire-resistant drapes. Safety Tips

May 9: Smoke alarms detect smoke. Fire sprinklers detect fire and help control it. Be safe and install both!

May 8: In wildfire prone areas, be sure to remove brush within 30 feet of a building to create survivable space. Brush Clearance Preparedness

May 7: Building Safety Month Tip: Don't let electrical cords create a danger in your house! (tips from your Building Inspector)

May 6: Install smoke alarms on all building stories. Remember bedrooms, outside of sleeping areas and in hallways. Replace batteries yearly. (Owner Certification of Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detector Compliance)

May 5: Have a garden hose long enough to reach areas of the home and other structures on the property.

May 4: Use this Fire Safety Checklist from the Los Angeles County Fire Department to begin reducing the accident potential of your home.

May 3: Keep combustibles and other items at least three feet away from all heaters. Look for heaters that have an auto-off feature.

May 2: Have a fire escape plan. Make sure you set at least two escape routes, stay low to the ground, never open doors that are hot, and have an outside meeting place. Week One -- Fire Safety & Awareness

May 1: Celebrate with Malibu! The Environmental Sustainability Department will provide daily tips that spotlight a specific area of building safety.

California Wildlife Center Addresses Spike in Sea Lion Strandings

In recent months, there has been a spike in sea lion strandings, also referred to as an unusual mortality event (UME). The California Wildlife Center (CWC) has rescued over 180 animals during this UME. In addition, hundreds more have been responded to, but were either gone on arrival, chased back into the water by humans or dogs or left on watch because rehabilitation facilities were overloaded and could not accept them.

CWC is currently constructing a temporary marine mammal rehabilitation facility to help alleviate the strain placed on permanent facilities during this UME and is hoping to have the temporary shelter up and running by the end of April.

CWC is seeking public assistance to achieve its goals during this UME crisis. Opportunities to help include:

Register for California Wildlife Center's 5th Annual Run on the Wild Side - Sunday, May 5, at Zuma Beach. Individual and team sign-ups are available. Visit www.regonline.com/runonthewildside to register today!

Donate items from California Wildlife Center's Wishlist on Amazon.com

General Donations are always accepted at www.cawildlife.org.

CWC reminds everyone to immediately report injured animals seen on or near the beach by calling the Animal Rescue hotline 310-458-WILD (9453). Details that will be helpful to responders can be found on the CWC website at <a
