Civic Center Stormwater Treatment Facility
The need to reduce the amount of bacteriological contamination entering Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider Beach and to reduce the number of beach postings and closures was addressed by the City of Malibu through the Civic Center Stormwater Treatment Facility Project, which included the design and construction of a stormwater filtration and disinfection facility on the north side of Civic Center Way, west of Cross Creek Road. The facility will process up to 1400 gallons per minute of stormwater runoff from the Civic Center Way / Cross Creek area. The facility provides filtration and disinfection of dry-weather flows and first flush runoff pumped from storm drains on Civic Center Way, Cross Creek Road and Malibu Road to the treatment facility. The runoff is then disinfected through ozone treatment to meet U.S. EPA water quality requirements. The project consisted of constructing pump stations and all related piping at the Cross Creek drain, Malibu Road drain and the Central Treatment Facility site, which was constructed by GB Cooke, Inc. The completion of the project was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on February 2, 2007.
